Chickens, Digging & Squirrel Hall

It’s Wednesday and so much to share with you all.

It’s been 10 days since the BIG move upstate. Between becoming a pro at fly swatting, overcoming my fear of caterpillars with bizarre colors/textures and finding the local TJ Maxx/Homegoods – I thought I was feeling a little more settled.

As most people in my life know – I had a dream of getting chickens, pigmy goats, red pandas (yes red pandas)  and whatever else my little heart desired to live out my country farm dream. Never mind that I can barely manage three dogs and it’s about to be winter or anything else that would seem logical like “uh you’re leaving this house in 6 months and whatcha gonna do with this boat load of animals when you go back to the city”.

I read the Dummy Guide to Farm Animals – or at least parts of it.

So after hearing from everyone who is logical and annoying saying “you’re crazy..blah blah blah” I decided to put my farm expansion on hold and thank god I did.

This morning Lulu one of our little doxie babies decided she was going to dig her way out of the zillion dollar fence I had built for them and catch the chipmunk she saw. She dug inhaling and eating dirt as she went, breathing like she was having a heart attack. I tried a plank of wood to block her – yeah no she was determined. So I decided to stop by the nursery near the house and buy a few plants that would block her!

Let’s say not only did I find big fat MUMs to block her but I met the Owner of Squirrel Hall Gifts (and nursery) Michael! His store is not just a nursery as I thought when I drove by but this amazing glorious piece of Anthropologie meets West Elm meets adorable decor meets civilization and taste!

From ducks in raincoats, gorgeous paintings, adorable plates – this place is a GEM!

He was fabulous and told me all about the amazing people who call Millbrook home. Invited me to a party to meet people, referred me to a hairdresser who does “all the Bergdorf Blondes” and guess what – he has chickens at the store in this adorable pen area with a house and eggs. I died!

These gorgeous gals with cool white fluffy hair do’s and big ones that look like they could walk a run way. But the best best best part – he is getting pigmy goats NEXT week and is building them a whole area with rocks to climb! This is going to be my own personal petting zoo! I am in heaven.

I returned home armed with MUMs to block Lulu’s escape plan and so far it seems to have worked. She was so pooped from trying she fell asleep on the porch snoring like a bear in hibernation!

Gotta Love Lu…

The sun is setting, dogs are chasing bugs and I am feeling so at home and a little less cynical. Thanks to a new friend, some chickens and pigmy goats.
